We’re excited to invite you to participate in our Introduction to Ash Splint Basketmaking Workshop, with Master Basket Maker, Barbara Francis. Barbara will be teaching students to make ash-split continuous-weave bookmarks.
A traditional Penobscot basketmaker, Barbara Francis learned ash splint & sweetgrass basketmaking from her Penobscot Elders. Barbara’s list of awards and recognition reaches back to the 90's. She was a Visiting scholar under the Traditional Apprentice Program with the Smithsonian, as well as an an artist in residence with the Peabody Museum. Her awards come from juried art shows, Lawrence Indian Art Show, Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum and more. A film about her "Penobscot Basket Maker" was nominated for an Emmy Award under documentary/educational category.
In addition to leading this workshop, Barbara will be guest-curator of MKIM's upcoming Contemporary Art Gallery exhibit, “Penobscot Basketmaker: Leaving a Footprint.” The exhibit will be open for viewing when the museum opens back up on May 1st, 2020.
