Tyowennatyerénhton First Words: An Introductory Mohawk Vocabulary Picture Book with English Translations
Tyowennatyerénhton - First Words is an introductory Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk) vocabulary book and photo book with English translations. Featuring photographs from the land, families, teachers and their students can learn numbers, colours, feelings, traditional foods and other aspects of the natural world, important to the Haudenosaunee.
Included in the book are additional vocabulary, as well as activities to connect with Mother Earth. Along with building vocabulary, this educational resource can be a starting off point for land-based learning and environmental stewardship. This book supports curriculum connections to media literacy, visual art, science, history, geography, mathematics and healthy living. As well it can be used as an opening discussion about the importance of language revitalization.
